Acer cultivation

Acer cultivation
Acers are supplied in 2 - 3 litre pots or bareroot. Green varieties burn in sun so prefer shade from hottest part of day. For container grown Acers - to overwinter - once leaves have dropped keep in sheltered position out of rain. Don't water until buds break in spring if in pots. Fine root systems rots if left out in pots. - Dwarf forms best for containers. 50% composted conifer bark 50% peat based compost or 80% moss peat 20% perlite or grit or John Inns loam based compost with added garden compost and grit. Water regularly but not too much. Pot on one pot size per season by end of July. Dormant in late October. Early spring saw off one third of roots on either side of root ball and one third from base if reached its max pot size. Keep plants watered and out of direct sunlight for two weeks after root pruning.

Acers in the garden like a peat based compost worked into the soil. They do not like clay or very sandy soils but tolerate a wide variety of conditions. Water newly planted maples for at least two seasons after planting and mulch root area. On heavy soils try planting on banks or in slightly raised beds.

Red varieties need sun for colour development. Generally full sun or shade is OK as long as roots don't dry out. In sun foliage colours are brighter and autumn colour more intense. In shade colour will green out and autumn colour is less intense but they do grow well in this situation. The more sun the plant gets the more water it will need.

Pruning - don't until the spring!

Wisteria

(Leguminosae/Papilionaceae). Wisteria. Genus of about 10 species of deciduous, woody-stemmed, twining climbers, grown for their spectacular flowers. Found in moist woodland and on streambanks in China, Korea, Japan and C. and S. USA. They have alternate, pinnate, dark green leaves with elliptic leaflets. Cultivated for their showy, pea-like, fragrant flowers usually borne in pendent racemes in May through to July, and again in August and September followed with decorative bean like velvety green seed pods. Stems twine anticlockwise around the support. Good for walls, pergolas and for growing against buildings and trees. Plant roots in shade, or pile rocks and stones around the base of the trunk to stop the soil drying out. Water well in dry, hot periods. Prune after flowering and again in late winter.

Well drained, fertile, moist soil in full sun or part shade best.
