(Apiaceae/Umbelliferae) Masterwort, Hattie's Pincushion. Genus of about 10 species of clump forming perennials, found in alpine woods and meadows from Europe to W. Asia. Good for flower arrangements and for drying

Astrantias prefer sun or partial shade, moist leafy soil. Flowers are good for cutting from June to August. Enclosing bracts are enlarged forming a ruff within which is a pincushion like flower umbel. Palmate leaves. Moisture loving, like woodland. Early summer flowering. Tough rootstock. The A. major varieties will tolerate drier conditions.
