Clematis cirrhosa var balearica
| Pale cream flowers, late winter, early spring. Vigorous. In the garden its flowers are its chief glory, along with its unusually pretty foliage, its silky seed heads and hardiness. The flowers are also scented, with a fresh citrus fragrance which is especially noticeable in the winter conservatory or in warm sheltered corners outside. The evergreen foliage is another valuable feature. Far daintier than the bold leaves of the more familiar winter evergreen clematis, C. armandii, the foliage of C. cirrhosa var. balearica in particular is usually prettily dissected and also tends to develop attractive bronzing in winter; it is also hardier, less vigorous and so more manageable in the garden. Following the flowers are the silvery seed heads which extend the appeal when the blooms have faded. Well drained soil best. Sold in 9cm pot
