| (Tropaeolaceae). Nasturtium, Flame Creeper. Genus of 80-90 species of hairless, climbing, trailing or bushy deciduous herbaceous perennials grown for their brightly coloured flowers. Many have tuberous roots and are found mainly in cool, mountainous areas in Central and South America. The alternate, rounded, peltate leaves are entire or palmately lobed. Roughly funnel-shaped flowers with 5 showy, clawed petals often with prominent spurs and 5 inconspicuous, pointed sepals are borne singly from the leaf axils. Some have blue grey leaves with golden yellow ochre flowers, others have rich red flowers followed by blue fruit. Grow climbing tropaeolums over a fence, trellis, pergola or non flowering shrub or allow to trail on a bank or dry wall. Some are good for a raised or scree bed or rock garden. Wisteria
| (Leguminosae/Papilionaceae). Wisteria. Genus of about 10 species of deciduous, woody-stemmed, twining climbers, grown for their spectacular flowers. Found in moist woodland and on streambanks in China, Korea, Japan and C. and S. USA. They have alternate, pinnate, dark green leaves with elliptic leaflets. Cultivated for their showy, pea-like, fragrant flowers usually borne in pendent racemes in May through to July, and again in August and September followed with decorative bean like velvety green seed pods. Stems twine anticlockwise around the support. Good for walls, pergolas and for growing against buildings and trees.
