| (Fumariaceae/Papaveraceae) Dutchman's breeches. Genus of 20 or more species of fleshy perennials - stem and root, from Asia and North America. Often found in moist habitats including woodland, especially in mountainous areas. Rhizomatous, tuberous or fleshy tap roots. Hairless, sometimes silvery grey leaves are fern like and much divided. Elegant arching sprays of pendent, heart shaped flowers borne in panicles or racemes. Dormant in winter. Some prefer the cool climate of woodland, others borders or rock gardens. Prefer neutral or slightly alkaline soil.
