| (Berberidaceae). Barrenwort. Bishop's Mitre. Genus of 30-40 species of spring flowering rhizomatous perennials, some evergreen. From the Mediterranean to temperate E. Asia occurring in woodland, scrub and shady, rocky places. Basal pinnate leathery leaves with spiny margins. Sometimes bronze tinged in spring and often colour well in autumn. Small flowers cup shaped with long or short spurs borne in racemes from April. Good ground cover under trees or shrubs. Cut back old leaves late winter just before new growth appears in spring. Humus rich, moist, well drained soil best in part shade. Flower April to June
