| Genus of approximately 100 species of mainly summer flowering bulbs, grown for fragrant, brightly coloured flowers. From wooded habitats and scrub in Europe, Asia south to the Philippines and North America. Fleshy, scaled bulb sometimes rhizomatous produces one unbranched glossy, leafy stem scattered or in whorls. Flowers usually several per stem, trumpet or bowl shaped often scented. Excellent cut flower. Sometimes reflexed as in turkscap. Well drained, cool, acid to neutral soil in sun, roots in semi shade.
