Potentilla
| (Rosaceae). Cinquefoil. Genus of about 500 species of perennials and deciduous shrubs, grown for clusters of small, flattish to saucer-shaped 5-petalled flowers and for their foliage. Found throughout the N. hemisphere in habitats ranging from meadows to mountain screes. Leaves are alternate, pinnate, veined and wrinkled. Flowers are produced over a long period from spring to autumn in cymes or terminal panicles and need to be cut back regularly to promote continuous flowering. Good on most soils and fairly tolerant of dry conditions once established. Good for mixed borders, rock gardens, low hedges and raised beds. Well drained, moderately fertile soils in sun or part shade

Potentilla x hopwoodiana
| This rare plant has exquisite pale pink and cream flowers with deeper centres on long stems. One of the attractions of P. x hopwoodiana is a flowering season well on into late autumn . In general potentillas need as much sun as you can give them and do best in poor, well-drained soils. Hopwoodiana, in particular, seems happiest when baked and starved. It has strong stems that dont need staking and the delightful habit of popping up amongst other plants. Ht 60cm/2'. Sold in 9cm pots
