5 Primulas of our choice for £20
| (Primulaceae). Primrose. Genus of about 400 species of herbaceous perennials, some of which are evergreen. Occur in a wide range of habitats from bogs and marshland to alpine areas, they are widely distributed throughout the N. hemisphere with almost half the species from the Himalayas. A few are also found in the S. hemisphere. All have rosettes of basal linear leaves, and scented tubular bell or primrose shaped flat flowers. Flower stems, leaves, sepals and sometimes, sections of the petals are covered with farina - a waxy powder. There are primulas suitable for almost every type of site. As moist soil is often best for Candelabras they are good around ponds. Tidy up dying foliage and dead head regularly. Primulas are classified accordingly - Candelabra, Polyanthus, Auricula. Alpine types need good drainage. Good for borders, bog garden, rock garden in a moist, humus rich soil.
