(Asteraceae/Compositae). Coneflower, Black eyed Susan. Genus of about 20 species of clump forming perennials with yellow daisy-like flower heads with central black cones, excellent for cutting. They have short rhizomes and come from moist meadows and light woodland in North America. They have branched or unbranched stems and narrowly lance-shaped, veined leaves. Usually solitary, daisy like flowerheads often with reflexed yellow ray-florets and conical centres consisting of black, brown or green disc-florets are borne on long stems over a long period from summer to autumn. Prefers moist soil. Grow in a border or naturalize in a meadow or woodland garden in heavy soil
