| (Dipsacaceae). Scabious, Pincushion flower. Genus of about 80 species of upright, clump forming perennials, some evergreen from sunny sites, dry meadows and rocky slopes mostly in the Mediterranean region but also in the rest of Europe, the Caucasus, Africa, Asia and Japan. They have mainly basal leaves, simple and entire or lobed, producing compound or solitary blue, white or maroon domed, pincushion-like central florets and larger marginal florets. These scented flowers appear in summer and are good for cutting. Dead head to prolong flowering. Ideal in a mixed sunny herbaceous border or wild garden. Attractive to bees and butterflies. Neutral to alkaline well drained soil, best in full sun.
