(Saururaceae). Genus of one species of deciduous perennial marginal water plant with far-spreading rhizomes. Found in damp, shady sites in woodland, scrub and marshy habitats in E. Asia. Good for groundcover, grown for its foliage of multi coloured leaves smelling of oranges when bruised. Insignificant flowers with oval white bracts. Will grow in water or beside ponds.

Moist, moderately fertile, humus rich soi, sun or semi shade. Ht 30cm/1'. Plants sold in 9cm pots.

The alternate, pinnate, light green, grey- green or blue-green leaves have prominent stipules. Each has 5 irregular sepals and petals, upper ones often forming a hood or tube, the flower making a short spur and looking like pineapples early summer.
