(Convallariaceae/Liliaceae). Solomon's Seal. Genus of about 50 species of spring or early summer flowering, rhizomatous perennials. From woodland in temperate regions of Eurasia and N. America. Cultivated for their foliage and flowers, they have arching ,unbranched stems and alternate, opposite or whorled, linear parallel-veined leaves that turn yellow in autumn. Pendent clusters of tubular or bell shaped white flowers with green tips in leaf axils along lower sides of the stems in late spring. Excellent for cutting. Flowers are usually followed by berry-like, spherical red or black fruits. Suitable for a North wall, shady border, woodland or rock garden. Humus-rich soil best in shady position
