(Asteraceae/Compositae). Coneflower. Genus of about 9 species of bold, stiff, summer flowering perennials. Found in dry prairies, gravelly hillsides and open woodland in C. and E. North America. Usually have black thick rootstocks and short rhizomes. Close relative to Rudbeckia. Hairy stems with linear, toothed leaves. Daisy like solitary flowers are fragrant with petals often reflexed. Sun or part shade.
