(Scrophulariaceae). Genus of approximately 250 species of deciduous, semi-evergreen perennial sub shrubs and shrubs. Occur in a variety of habitats from open plains to subalpine and alpine areas, in North and Central America. Leaves are usually linear, borne in opposite pairs or whorls. Grown for their racemes or panicles of tubular, 2-lipped flowers rather like foxgloves from early summer to mid autumn. Smaller varieties are good for rock gardens.
Fertile, well drained soil in sun or part shade best.
