(Rosaceae). Cinquefoil. Genus of about 500 species of perennials and deciduous shrubs, grown for clusters of small, flattish to saucer-shaped 5-petalled flowers and for their foliage. Found throughout the N. hemisphere in habitats ranging from meadows to mountain screes. Leaves are alternate, pinnate, veined and wrinkled. Flowers are produced over a long period from spring to autumn in cymes or terminal panicles and need to be cut back regularly to promote continuous flowering. Good on most soils and fairly tolerant of dry conditions once established. Good for mixed borders, rock gardens, low hedges and raised beds.
Moderately fertile soils in sun or part shade
