(Zingiberaceae). Genus of about 18 species of late summer and early autumn flowering tuberous perennials. They are cultivated for their unusual, hooded, orchid-like flowers which have prominent, entire or 2-lobed lips in late in summer when the soil should be kept moist. Arching leaves are stem-sheathing and linear. Dies down in winter. Top dress with leaf mould. Good for damp, shady borders, rock gardens, peat beds and woodland gardens. Eventual Ht 20cm/10". Plants sold in 9cm pots
