Genus of approximately 250 species of summer flowering, clump forming perennials native to a variety of habitats from cool and moist to hot and dry sites in scrub, on grassy banks and stony slopes or in high mountains, in non-tropical parts of the N. hemisphere. Ovate to lance shaped entire, scalloped or toothed often aromatic leaves borne in opposite pairs. Good for edging particularly where they can tumble over paving. Hairy, square stems with spike-like cymes of tubular irregularly 2-lipped blue flowers borne over a long period. Aromatic and loved by bees and cats.
