Genus of about 50 species of rhizomatous summer flowering clump forming perennials from mountainous habitats, streamsides, moist meadows and woodland in arctic and temperate regions of Europe, Asia, New Zealand, N and S America and Africa. Good groundcover. Erect, rounded, 5-petalled, saucer to bowl shaped flowers (some double) borne in small clusters. Long flowering period. Leaves have toothed or scalloped margins borne in basal rosettes. Some can be grown in boggy conditions, as a water-side marginal plant.
