Ferns that prefer dry shade Aspleniums; many adiantum species
Arachnoides standishii; Asplenium scolopendrium; most dryopteris; polypodiums and polystichums.

Ferns for neutral conditions
All blechnums; Equisetum hyemale; Gymnocarpium dryopteris; Oreopteris limbosperma; Phegopteris connectilis.

Ferns that prefer damp conditions Athyrium species
Dropteris cristata; Matteuccia struthiopteris; Osmunda species; Osmunda regalis cultivars; Woodwardia areolata.

Most ferns will grow in any kind of soil although Dryopteris, Athyrium and Osmunda do best in more acidic soils. The Polystichums and Aspleniums prefer alkaline (lime) eg Asplenium trichomanes.
